For those people adventuresome enough to travel south of the border, Tijuana awaits with bargains. For example, rum and tequila sell for $3.00/Iitre, six packs of Mexican beer are $1.30. Rompope, the Mexican equivalent of eggnog, averages $1.80/litre. Kahlua is still relatively expensive at $4.50/litre, but imitations can be found for half the price.

It was reported that government agents would be stationed in grocery stores to prevent Americans front taking certain food staples across the border into the US, but that seems to be an idle threat.

There is a blossoming black market in San Ysidro, but the black market is legal. People are furiously trading pesos into dollars and vice versa. The going rate last week was 90-95 pesos to the dollar, the official Mexican government rate is 70 to the dollar. People who want to increase their buying power in Mexico can make a short stop in San Ysidro.
