ASUCSD Minutes from May 5th (The Coup)

Anshu Abhat and Vanessa Bronte, Students

We are from the Emerging Leaders Program. We just wanted to come and talk to guys a little bit about one of the decisions we made for our publicity for our event, Mirage, last Friday night. We chose not to advertise in The Guardian because of a letter we received from the SAAC organization regarding the April Fools prank that was with the Koala in The Guardian. We wanted to reaffirm our support for SAAC and their measure for asking for an apology from The Guardian. Our organization decided not to advertise in The Guardian which we thought would be a big hit in our advertising scheme, but as you can see, and I know that this is a concern as Sun God is approaching, our organization was able to boast 1200 people at our peak hour. So, we are very happy about that. That is one of the largest turnouts that ELP has ever had for one of their events. We are very firm in our decision to not support The Guardian through their connection with The Koala. We ask you to do the same. You shouldn't worry about your attendance especially if you push for it now

Bryan Barton, Student

I am Bryan Barton and I am the founder and president of a Philosophy Forum. Philosophy is very important because you have to philosophize. If you choose not to philosophize, then you also get the reason why not to philosophize and therefore you are going to be philosophizing. I have been doing a lot of philosophizing about student governments and things like that and I have been giving it a lot of thought and I have talked with a lot of people, a lot of different types of people. A lot of people have told me that the A.S. doesn't serve them well. A lot of people have told me that the A.S. can better be served by a goat. The A.S. can be better served by a goat, according to a lot of people. After talking to these people the problem I really have is, that students need to speak up. People need to come together, Republicans, Liberals, Conservatives, Democrats, Libertarians, Greens, Technocrats, Anarchists, everyone needs to come together under this banner of, me. They chose me to be their leader, and as I am now their leader, my goat is my new co-council. As I am now their leader of this new organization, I am taking over the A.S. Council. I am President of A.S. If anyone has a problem with this that is fine. (Surround them) Please remove all electronic equipment. In case you haven't noticed, this is a coup. Please step down at the count of..

Jeff Boyd, moves for a 5 minutes recess; motion is seconded and passed by consensus.

Cat Yapyuco calls ASUCSD Council Meeting #1 back to order at 7:00pm

Warren College Student Council Excerpts:

Excerpt from WCSC on Thursday, November 20th, 2003:

Has anyone read the new issue of the Koala. The Koala disgusts me. It seems to be getting progressively worse, this issue has an article that is racial and personal, obscene and humiliating. They are always walking on the edge of first amendment rights. It seems to devalue our sense of community. Provost Jordan wants to know if we'll pass a resolution denouncing the Koala or send a letter to Renee Barnett-Terry to say we're sorry for the article about her. He said he'll kick in $50 to do something for her.

Excerpt from Thursday, April 8, 2004:

Jacob: Would UCSD address the hate crimes and hate language as shown in Koala?

Joseph: We have tried to reassure the targets to make them feel welcome. We can't stop the Koala for printing their publications but we can say we do not necessarily support its views.

Doug: If I unsubscribe from LA Times and enough people stop, then the power of the dollar would eventually make them change. But we can't unsubscribe from The Guardian. How was it determined that The Guardian is by default the official newspaper. But we don't necessarily support it. I can't remember another time than this last week.

Daniel: Evan said the Editorial Board was 100% behind this. I didn't know until Sunday of production and I saw Brian Barton's head on the computer screen.

Joseph: If you feel strongly about this, you should go talk to the editors of The Guardian. I can't remember another time when something like this happened.
